New Yorkie Puppy Friendly Information

For the new puppy parent.

1. Hypoglycemia Alert

Due to their small size, Yorkie puppies are prone to hypoglycemia or low blood sugar.

Signs include lethargy and floppiness. Use the Nutri-Cal paste included in your gift bag for immediate sugar intake.
Honey or Karo syrup are alternatives.

Offer them food, after giving them the Nutri-Cal.

If your puppy doesn't respond enough to lick the paste:  GO TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY !!!

2. Feeding Guidelines

Feed your puppy specialized puppy food for the first year. Consult your vet for food recommendations.

A new environment might affect their eating habits initially.

3. Safe Spaces

Let your puppy sleep in a Pet Taxi to provide them a safe spot, especially when you have guests over.

4. Harness vs. Collar

Use a harness for walking, don't use a collar.

You can use a collar for tags and information but use a harness to walk them.
A collar puts too much pressure on their Trachea and can cause them to have a reverse sneeze.
Also while you are walking them if a stray dog tries to get them you can jerk the leash and catch your puppy out of danger.

5. Grooming

Bath your puppy with a good puppy shampoo.
I use a product called Cowboy shampoo and conditioner. (get it at GEBOS) Good product.

6. Nail Trimming

Trim toe nails often you should not be able to hear their toenails on a floor. Handle their feet while you are petting them. It helps get them used to the nail cutting.

7. Vaccinations

Your puppy is only partially vaccinated. Full protection requires 3-4 sets of shots. Limit outdoor exposure until fully vaccinated.

8. Potty Training

Potty training is really training you to see their clues of when they need to go out. If they wake up they need to go, if they eat they need to go. Take them out side at least every hour and if you take them to the same spot all the time it helps to teach them to go in that spot.

9. Behavioral Training

I have provided “No No cans” to help you in your training.

Your puppy will already know what a "No-No Can" is, as I shake it at them when they start to bark.

Use it as a tool not a weapon.

If they are doing some thing they are not supposed to do, shake it, or toss it close to them and say “No!”
It startles them to stop that behavior.

10. Chewing Prevention

Chewing is a common issue. Make toys and chewable items available. Use Apple Bitters spray to deter them from chewing undesired objects.

11. Outdoor Safety

Never leave your puppy unattended outdoors due to the risks of theft or predatory animals.

Please don’t leave this baby outside alone.

I know of one lady who had her puppy stolen and another who had hers killed by a hawk.
